LEXI Translate's Glossaries allow users to specify the translation of a word or phrase from one language to a another. This is simlar to LEXI's Substitutions feature. For example, a user translating from English to Spanish, can translate baseball to béisbol.
Words and phrases in glossaries are case-sensitive when used with Google Translate but are case-insensitive when used with DeepL Translate.
Creating a Glossary
To create a glossary:
- From the LEXI Translate dashboard, navigate to LEXI Translate Models, and then select New Glossary Model.
- In the Create a Glossary Model window, enter a Model Name for your new glossary, then select a Source Language and a Target Language.
- You can also enter optional Tags to help you organize your glossaries (ex. English-Spanish).
- Click Submit.
Adding Glossary Entries
Once you have created a glossary, add translations to it:
- From the dashboard, select Glossary Models, and then select your glossary from the list.
- In the Tanslation window, enter word-for-word translations:
- Enter a Phrase to Translate. This is the input word or phrase to translate from (ex baseball).
- Enter a Phrase to Use Instead. This is the output word or phrase to translate into (béisbol).
Note: Leave this field blank to prevent the system from translating the word.
- Click Add Phrase and then click Save Changes. Your new entry displays in the Translations table, where you can use the pencil icon to edit or the trash icon to delete it.
Importing and Exporting Glossaries
You can also create a glossary from a CSV file or download your glossary's translations. This allows you to add a larger number of translations more quickly than through the LEXI Translate interface.
- Use a spreadsheet tool (ex. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, etc.) to create a two two-column spreadsheet with no header, and then save the document as a CSV file.
- The left-hand column contains the input words to be translated from (ex. baseball).
- The right-hand column contains the output words to be translated to (ex. béisbol).
Note: Leave this column blank to prevent the system from translating the word.
- Click Upload Translations and then follow the prompts to upload your CSV file. Your translations display in the Translations list.
To export your translations, click Download Translations. Once you have downloaded your translations, you can edit the file and then follow the steps in this section to upload your changes and additions.
Glossary Training
LEXI begins training your glossary automatically after you save the glossary. The glossary's edit page indicates its availability. You cannot add your glossary to a Translate instance until training completes, and the status messages display READY.
