UHD592 LEXI Live Caption Quick Start Guide

LEXI Live generates your primary captions in the source language.

This guide follows one worked example end to end: English primary captions on Service 1 (S1) for the UHD592.

Before you begin

Captions arrive at the encoder over iCap from a LEXI Live instance running in EEG Cloud. If any part of that chain is not in place, the encoder shows no caption activity and nothing on screen explains why. Confirm all six conditions below before you configure anything.

Check Where to look Correct state
Encoder build and license Encoder > System > System Info Build: 1.0.4 or later
iCap connection Encoder > Main page iCap Status reports Connection State: Connected
LEXI server and API key Encoder > System > iCap/LEXI Your server is listed, and Test LEXI succeeds against it
S1 access code iCap Admin > Access Codes The S1 code exists and shows Primary Encoder in green text
LEXI Live instance running EEG Cloud > LEXI Live The S1 instance State is toggled On
iCap Login Settings on encoder Encoder > Main (Edit) > iCap Login Settings Credentials are present in the form

Note: The LEXI/iCap server on your encoder authenticates with an API key generated from your EEG Cloud account. Confirm the key on your encoder is current and belongs to the account running your LEXI instances. If you do not have an API key, contact AI-Media support before continuing.

Step 1: Edit LEXI / iCap server

  1. On the encoder web interface, open the System > iCap/LEXI tab. Existing servers are listed here, including the default Cloud.
  2. Select the Edit icon to add the valid EEG Cloud API Key created in the previous setup on EEG Cloud (UHD592 EEG Cloud Setup - Step 1).
  3. Paste the API Key in the API Key value.
  4. Click the Save button.
Tip: To check the connection, select Test LEXI. The message Valid credentials! confirms the settings are correct.

Configure LEXI Text Settings

  1. Return to the Main page by clicking the Main tab and select the Settings icon next to the encoder name.

  2. In the navigation bar, select LEXI Text Settings.

  3. Under LEXI Live Instance:
    • Access Code — select the access code you created for your primary captions. In this example, the English S1 code created under your iCap account.
    • Instance — once an access code is chosen, the LEXI Live instances referenced to the chosen Access Code is listed. Select the LEXI Live instance you created in EEG Cloud for that service.

  4. The LEXI Control options below (Toggle on GPI-E, Serial Port Captions, and Upstream Captions) control when LEXI starts and stops automatically. Leave them Disabled unless your workflow requires the use of these configurations.
  5. Select Confirm when done.

Configure Caption Settings

  1. In the settings panel, select Caption Settings. Most fields can stay at their defaults; the key ones for primary English captions are below.

  2. Encoding Settings:
    1. CC Output Format — choose the format that matches your downstream and regional requirements: CTA 608/708, KSX Extensions, or OP-42/OP-47.
      • In this example, select CTA 608/708.
      • Your choice changes the rest of the Caption Settings — for example, CTA 608/708 exposes different options than OP-42/OP-47.
      • Auto-Erase Interval, Upstream CC Format, SD Line Number and HD Line Number can stay at their defaults (16, Default, 21 and Default) unless your facility requires otherwise.
  3. Language Codes — Language 1 is required. Fill Languages 2 to 6 only if you carry additional caption languages.
    • In this example, keep the default eng (English), since the S1 captions are English.
  4. Decoder Settings — This will set which service the encoder decodes and displays. They affect the decoded output only, not what is encoded onto the stream.
    • HD Service — the service decoded for HD output, accepts CC1 to CC4 and S1 to S6. Set to S1 for the primary captions for this example.
    • SD Service — the service decoded for SD output. Set to CC1 for the primary captions for this example.
    • Enable Captions — select this so the encoder outputs the decoded captions.
  5. 608/708 Settings (shown when CTA 608/708 is selected or CC Output Format).
    • Max Row Length: the default is 32 characters.
    • 608 Language Mapping: which 708 services are carried on the 608 channels. The default is CC1/S1, CC3/S2. Change it only if you carry captions above S2.
    • Encode 608 Downcompatibility Bytes: leave selected unless your downstream requires otherwise.
    • Upconversion Control: per-service checkboxes for Service 1 through Service 6, with All On and All Off buttons. All services are selected by default.
  6. Select Confirm to save.

Validate your LEXI Live Caption

Creating a LEXI instance does not start captioning. The instance must be started before the encoder can receive captions.

If your setup uses GPI triggers, SCTE messages, or upstream blocking, those control when LEXI starts and stops, and you can skip this step. Otherwise, start the instance in one of these ways:

  • From EEG Cloud: On the LEXI Instances page, set the instance's State toggle to On. You can also start it with the EEG Cloud API, or with a schedule on the Scheduling page.
  • From the encoder: On the encoder's Main page, select Turn on LEXI.
