Using the Cavena Encoder Module

The Cavena Encoder Module allows your Encoder Pro (HD492) to send caption data from your HD492 to the Cavena STU Client, which is a subtitle encoder and renderer. This module gives Cavena users easy connectivity between their HD492 and their Cavena Subtitle Input Protocol (STU) client. 

The Cavena STU runs on its own server computer, separate from your encoder. It receives captions from one or more encoders, organizes them based on priorities configured in the STU, and then outputs the captions to the sources configured in the STU.

Applicability

Access to the Cavena encoder module is available on all Encoder Pro (HD492) systems running version 5.6.0 or later.

Before You Begin

Before activating the Cavena module:

  • Fully configure your HD492 system, including network access, languages, and all software upgrades
  • Install, license and configure your Cavena STU client on a workstation on your LAN
  • Have a working knowledge on using the Cavena STU client
  • Test and confirm the Cavena STU client runs properly

Configuration

Configuring the Cavena STU Client

To configure the Cavena STU Client on your encoder:

  1. In a web browser, connect to the IP address of your encoder, and then log in with your username and password.
  2. From the left toolbar, click Cavena.
  3. On the General tab of the Cavena page, select Enable Service.
  4. Enter the IP Address of the Cavena STU client computer, for example 192.168.1.213.
  5. Enter the Port where the Cavena STU Client accepts connections. By default, this is 4261.
  6. Click Apply. The Cavena Connection field in the Status pane displays Connected. If Connected does not display, consult the encoder's logs.

  7. Confirm the languages in the Subtitle Control settings are correct. If they are not:
    1. From the left toolbar, click Caption Settings. The Caption Settings page displays.
    2. In the Language Codes section, enter your encoder's ISO639 three-letter language code in the Language 1 and Language 2 fields. These languages correspond to the Cavena module's Primary and Secondary languages, respectively. A blank language defaults to English.
    3. Click Apply Settings.

    4. In the left toolbar, click Cavena to return to the Cavena module settings, and then confirm the languages are correct. If not, repeat these steps.
  8. Configure the remaining Subtitle Control settings, and click Update. All of these settings are optional.
    Note: You must click Update for the Primary and Secondary language settings individually.

Configuring CCPlay Output

CCPlay inserts caption data from imported text or binary files into the encoder’s SDI video output. You can configure CCPlay to work with Cavena on your encoder, and bring pre-existing captions from an external file to your output. For more information about CCPlay, visit Using the CCPlay Feature.

After configuring Cavena, follow these steps to configure CCPlay output:

  1. From the left toolbar, select CCPlay, and then click the Upload tab.
  2. Click Select Caption File(s), then navigate to and double-click the caption file you want to upload. The Status displays Uploaded file successfully! with a green check mark. If an error or warning message displays with a red X symbol, choose a different file.

    CCPlay supports many subtitle file formats, including .ecf, .scc, .srt, Cheetah binary and ASCII.

  3. Click the File List tab. Your uploaded files display in the list.
  4. Set your preferred Playback Mode, for example Now.

  5. In the Actions column, click S1 alongside your captions file.
  6. Click on the Status tab. Captioned content displays in the Previous, Current, and Next columns.

  7. Click Cavena in the left toolbar. Captions from the Status tab display in the Recent Caption area of the Status pane.
